HEALTH DESK

The School of Nursing Sciences and Allied Health, Jamia Hamdard and the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) are organizing a three-day Online Training Programme for Nurses. Supported by the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, the training programme will focus on Home Based Nurse-Led Care for COVID-19 & like Illnesses between 1st to 3rd July 2020. The inaugural session was held on 1st July 2020.

The programme was launched by Prof. (Dr) Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor GGSIP University and Prof (Dr). Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard in the presence of Padma Shri Dr K K Aggarwal, President HCFI; Dr K K Kalra, Course Director; Dr Manju Chhugani, Course Director and Dean; Dr Amarjeet Kaur, Director University Centre for Disaster Management Studies, GGSIP University, and Dr Anil, Director, HCFI, among others.

Speaking at the event, Dr K K Aggarwal, said, “Continuous education and training are the need of the hour for skill development and upgrading the knowledge of the healthcare work force. Nursing staff constitute more than one third of manpower involved in healthcare service delivery and they are also those with whom patients interact the maximum. This makes it imperative for them to stay updated on recent developments in healthcare and this programme is an attempt to do just that.”

Prof. (Dr) Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, said, “Hospital acquired infections are main concern for patient safety and nurses have a major role in control and prevention. This course will give a lot of emphasis to these aspects and best practices and is an appreciable initiative by the nursing school, Jamia Hamdard.”

The three-day course aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of nurses, and make them more confidant, efficient, and better communicators. They would be able to take better timely decisions in the best interest of patients to save lives especially in the home care environment. The course has been developed under the supervision of competent nursing and medical professionals.

Adding further, Prof. (Dr) Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor GGSIP University, said, “Outcomes of patient management are dependent on the quality of nursing care they receive. Besides providing care, a nurse is also an educator, communicator, counsellor and empathizer for ailing patients and their families. A caring, knowledgeable and skilled nurse enhances patient experience.”

Prof. (Dr) Manju Chhugani, added, “In these unprecedented times, I take it as life time opportunity for nurses of India to come forward and help the patients in providing home based care. I am very confident that the trio collaboration of HCFI, Jamia Hamdard and IP University will make a remarkable difference by providing online theory and skill-based care. It’s time for nurses to dispense care with knowledge and compassion. Team work works. This is the first such online training program and is a value addition for nurses.”

Dr K K Kalra, also gave his views, and said, “After this course, nursing professionals will be in a better position to play the role of caregivers, holistic care providers, decision makers, communicators, counsellors, and patient advocates. Nurses have an important function in prevention and control of hospital associated infection. There is a need to empower nursing professionals in our country.”

Any registered nurse or final-year nursing student can register for the programme at a nominal fee. There will be an online assessment at the end of 24-hours of course completion for a duration of 80 minutes with two attempts. Successful candidates will be issued a certificate of completion and will be able to perform home-based care with confidence and efficiency.
