Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has asked minority communities, particularly Muslims to empower themselves through education saying education and skill could open new opportunities for them.

He said Madarasa is an important institution in imparting education for children of Muslim community and asked them to blend technology and traditional teachings.

Addressing the conference, ‘Taleem O’ Tarbiyat’ organised by Bombay Stock Exchange in Mumbai on Friday, Mr. Jaitley asserted that Indian constitution provides protection to the minority community and affirmed that the government remains committed to the welfare of minorities.

The Finance Minister said higher growth rate impacts all by way of offering economic opportunities but accepted that certain minorities have lagged behind. He informed that poverty rate among Muslim community has gone down from 52 percent in 1991 to about 27 percent in 2011, some communities like Jains and Parsis have overcome the challenge of poverty.

Mr. Jaitley said while higher growth rate impacts all, by way of offering economic opportunities, certain minorities have lagged behind and those areas need to be addressed.

Mr Jaitley also said India is protected from all the political and economic challenges that the world is facing and it provides immense opportunity for the country to grow further. He said the country’s economic growth is better than many of its peers and is in a sweet spot. He said the country will take the opportunity provided by stable political and economic environment and will grow further.

Speaking about economic challenges, Mr. Jaitley said amidst global slow down, the Indian economy has managed to register 7 to 7.5 % growth, which is commendable. He called upon the members of the minority community to empower themselves through education, acquire skills and tap opportunities availing of benefits like MUDRA Scheme and other programmes.

Mr. Zafar Sareshwala, Chanellor of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University, and organizer of the ‘Taleem-o-Tarbiyat’ Conference appealed to youth and women of Muslim community to engage with government and take benefits of diverse welfare schemes.

An MoU was signed on the occasion between Maulana Azad National Urdu University and UFO Digital Cinema for imparting English, Maths and Science education through satellite.
