Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday assured that there is no shortage of food stocks in the country, crediting India’s farmers for achieving record agricultural production.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the National Conference on Agriculture for the Kharif Campaign 2026 in New Delhi, the minister said India’s foodgrain production is estimated to cross 376 million tonnes this year, registering a growth of 5.3 per cent compared to the previous year.
Mr. Chouhan said the achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of Indian farmers along with the government’s continued focus on agriculture and farmer welfare. He added that India has now emerged as the world’s largest producer of rice, surpassing China in overall production.
Highlighting the importance of the two-day conference, the minister said the event would help prepare a comprehensive roadmap for the upcoming Kharif season and strengthen the agricultural sector. He noted that discussions during the conference would focus on organic farming, integrated farming, sustainable agricultural practices and ways to improve farmers’ income.
The conference aims to formulate strategies for the forthcoming Kharif sowing season with special emphasis on increasing productivity, climate resilience, infrastructure development and ensuring long-term prosperity for farmers.
Senior officials from the Centre and various state governments, representatives of agricultural institutions, scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and other stakeholders are participating in the event to deliberate on coordinated action plans for the agricultural sector.
Ministers of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ram Nath Thakur and Bhagirath Choudhary were also present at the inauguration ceremony along with senior government officials.
