External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has called for reform of the UN Security Council, saying India and Africa cannot remain under represented in global decision-making.

Addressing a gathering at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, Jaishankar called for fair African representation in both permanent and non-permanent membership and recalled India’s efforts during its 2023 G20 presidency to secure permanent membership for the African Union.

On the final leg of his three-nation African tour, Jaishankar said that India was Africa’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade nearing 100 billion US dollars. He said over 220 Indian-supported development projects worth 4.5 billion dollars had been completed across Africa. He urged Indian businesses to invest in the continent and called for stronger cooperation in food security, agriculture and sustainable development.

Recalling Ethiopia’s 1896 victory at Adwa against Italian forces, Jaishankar said it inspired anti-colonial struggles and resonated with India’s freedom movement. He said India’s development vision for 2047 and Africa’s Agenda 2063 offered complementary pathways.
