Jaat-agitation hit normal life in Haryana

Central government has constituted a high-power committee headed by Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu to look into demand of Jats for reservation in education and jobs.

Other members in the committee are Satpal Malik, Avinash Rai Khanna and Union Ministers Dr. Mahesh Sharma, and Sanjiv Balyan.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Sunday, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, the committee has been asked to submit a comprehensive report to find the solution of this problem.

Rajnath Singh also appealed to the people of Haryana to help in maintaining peace and order in the state.

Earlier, the Home Minister held a review meeting in his residence over the issue. The meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Army Chief Dalbir Singh, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi among others.

Meanwhile, the Haryana government has agreed to bring a Bill in the upcoming Assembly session to give reservation to Jat community in the state.

BJP General Secretary and party state in charge Anil Jain said this after meeting Home Minister Rajnath Singh along with a delegation of Jat leaders in New Delhi.

However, despite the Haryana govt’s decision, fresh incidents of violence have been reported with protesters in Bhiwani and Sonepat districts setting a fire two police chowkis, shops and an ATM.

Violence has also been reported from Hansi in Hisar district and Dadri in Bhiwani district.

Curfew continues in district cities of Rohtak, Hissar, Jhajjar, Kaithal, Jind and Bhiwani besides some small towns of the state.

Army is staging flag marches in these towns. Nine districts are under Army’s control as 73 columns have been deployed across the state.

Haryana police and paramilitary forces have also been deployed along with army.

191 persons have been booked for indulging in violence. 10 persons have been killed and about 150 injured during the ongoing Jat stir.

However, some curfew bound places are limping back to normal. A number of roads have also been that were blocked by agitators have been cleared.

Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar chaired a meeting in which Army chief and other senior Defence officials were present.

During the meeting, he was apprised about the deployment of army personnel in the state and the difficulties being faced by them.
