Millions Unite in Worship as Hajj Pilgrimage Commences in Saudi Arabia

MAKKAH: The annual Hajj pilgrimage — one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam — officially commenced on Monday as millions of Muslims from across the world gathered in the holy city of Makkah amid intense summer heat and continuing concerns over instability in the Middle East.
Saudi authorities said more than 1.5 million pilgrims from outside the Kingdom have already arrived to perform the sacred journey. The pilgrimage this year is taking place against the backdrop of fragile regional peace following the Iran conflict and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty across the region.
For millions of believers, however, the spiritual significance of Hajj remains far greater than worldly anxieties. Pilgrims arriving in Makkah described the journey as an emotional and life-changing experience, fulfilling a religious obligation that every financially and physically capable Muslim is required to perform at least once in a lifetime.
Egyptian pilgrim Samya Abdul Moneim expressed deep gratitude after reaching the holy city. “I feel blessed and overwhelmed with happiness,” she said. “It is impossible to describe this feeling in words. I thank God for giving me this opportunity.”
Pilgrims Begin Sacred Rituals in Extreme Temperatures
As part of the opening rituals, thousands of pilgrims moved toward Mina — the vast tent city located on the outskirts of Makkah — while many others performed Tawaf around the Holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque under scorching temperatures.
Despite the severe heat, the atmosphere remained filled with devotion and prayer. Pilgrims carrying umbrellas and handheld fans could be seen navigating crowded pathways, while volunteers distributed drinking water to prevent dehydration. Cooling systems and giant mist-spraying fans have also been installed at key locations to help worshippers cope with the harsh weather conditions.
The Hajj pilgrimage, spread across several days, is regarded by Muslims as a profound spiritual journey offering a chance to seek forgiveness, purification, and renewed faith. For many pilgrims, the journey represents years of savings, prayers, and waiting for official permits.
Saudi Health Ministry Issues Heat Safety Advisory
Amid rising temperatures, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health has issued an urgent advisory urging pilgrims to take preventive measures against heat exhaustion and sun exposure, particularly during peak daytime hours.
The ministry advised pilgrims to use umbrellas while walking, drink adequate water and fluids regularly, and avoid long exposure to direct sunlight. Health officials also urged worshippers to immediately seek medical help if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, or fatigue.
Authorities emphasized that awareness and compliance with health instructions are crucial for ensuring the safety of pilgrims throughout the pilgrimage season.
Namira Mosque Prepared for Day of Arafat
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance announced extensive preparations at the historic Namira Mosque ahead of the Day of Arafat — considered the most important day of Hajj.
The mosque has been equipped with nearly 125,000 square meters of premium carpets, upgraded air-conditioning and ventilation systems, improved water services, and advanced sound infrastructure to accommodate the massive influx of worshippers.
To facilitate smooth movement, authorities have organized 72 entry and exit gates and installed surveillance systems across the mosque complex. Additionally, 150 digital guidance screens and 10 multilingual information platforms have been set up to assist pilgrims from different countries.
Saudi officials said the large-scale arrangements reflect the Kingdom’s continued efforts to ensure that pilgrims can perform Hajj rituals safely, comfortably, and with ease despite challenging weather conditions and heightened regional sensitivities.
