Paris is on a high alert as major security measures in place ahead of fresh anti-government protests today. Protesters wearing yellow vests have been holding demonstrations in France since November over soaring fuel prices.
Shops, metro stations and landmarks like the Eiffel Tower were due to close as authorities fear protests could turn violent.
The French capital saw its worst riots in decades last weekend. Since then, the yellow vests movement has snowballed into a wider revolt against President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies and his top-down approach to power.
Mr Macron this week gave in to some of the protesters’ demands for measures to help the poor and struggling middle classes, including scrapping a planned increase in fuel taxes and freezing electricity and gas prices next year.
