Former Indian women’s hockey captain and Arjuna awardee has accused her husband, also a former hockey player, of physically and mentally torturing her when the couple was officiating in a tournament organised by the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala, in November last year.

The former hockey captain claimed that her husband made demands for dowry twice in the month of November last year and subjected her to physical as well as mental abuse.

On the basis of the complaint filed by Suraj Lata Devi on January 10, 2020, with the Manipur’s Heingang Police Station, the officials at Sultanpur Lodhi Police Station have filed a case against Shanta Kumar Singh, Lata’s husband.

In her complaint the Arjuna awardee mentioned that last year, she along with her husband participated in a hockey championship organised by the Racing Club de France (RCF). Late on November 8, the couple arrived at RCF and the arrangements for their stay were made in a quarter on the premises of RCF itself.

The officials from Manipur approached their counterparts in Punjab’s Kapurthala and case was registered against the accused on the basis of victim’s complaint

For three years in a row, she led the Indian women’s hockey team to the gold and has been honoured with the Arjuna award by the Indian government
