The Election Commission has issued show cause notice to BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj for his remarks on population control. In its notice, the Commission has observed that the Mr Maharaj has prima facie violated the model code of conduct.
The Commission has asked him to file his reply till tomorrow morning as to why no action should be taken against him. The Poll Body had received a complaint in connection with the remarks on Saturday. Mr Maharaj, an MP from Unnao, had made his remarks at a meeting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
A seven phase assembly polls are to be held in the State. The BJP MP’s remarks came days after the Supreme Court ruled that political parties and candidates can not seek votes in the name of religion or caste.
