In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), more than 670 women and 48 new victims per day, have been treated for sexual violence in displacement camps in the last two weeks. According to the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), around 6,00,000 people have sought refuge in camps near Goma, the capital of North Kivu province after fleeing rebel violence in their home towns in the surrounding region. It said most of the victims reported being assaulted when they left the camps to get food or wood. The charity added that more than half of the victims said they were assaulted by armed men.

Military Governor of North Kivu province, Lieutenant General Constant Ndima, said he could not rule out that members of the military had committed sex crimes.
