Rohit Vemula, a Dalit Ph D student of Hyderabad Central University yesterday committed suicide by hanging himself. His suicide has generated outrage among Dalits and other deprived section of society across the country. Rohit from Dalit community with their four other colleagues was removed from the hostel a few days ago.
In protest he had been living in the open with other students. Several other students were with him in the movement.
Vemula Rohit has left a suicide note blaming nobody for this extreme step.

Meanwhile tension prevailed in University of Hyderabad over the suicide of one of the five Dalit research scholars following their expulsion from the hostel.
Police intervened to shift the body from the campus to the hospital for autopsy as students resisted their attempts, demanding justice to the student’s family. They also blamed university authorities and a central minister for the suicide.
The student groups are demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor P. Appa Rao and Union Minister of State for Labour (independent charge) Bandaru Dattatreya, who allegedly got the five students belonging to Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) sacked.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of various student groups said Rohith was highly depressed due to suspension and expulsion from the hostel. JAC said the student was hurt due to the social boycott.
Union Minister Dattatreya, 3 others booked over student suicide in Hyderabad
A case was registered today against Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and three others in connection with the suicide of a PhD Student Rohit Vemula in Hyderabad Central University in Hyderabad.
Rohit committed suicide after writing a letter which revealed that he was pained as the university authorities took disciplinary action following a letter written by Central Minister Dattatreya to the Union HRD minister Smiriti Irani.
