Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts near Yanam by forenoon tomorrow. The India Meteorological Department has forecast winds reaching 135 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 150 kilometres per hour. State authorities have stepped up preparedness as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and coastal inundation are expected in several areas.
The cyclone was centred 170 kilometres south-southeast of Visakhapatnam this evening. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is occurring in several districts, including Konaseema, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli, with isolated places likely to receive 21 centimetres or more of rainfall. The state government is closely monitoring the situation, while district administrations have established control rooms and intensified preparedness and relief measures. The State Disaster Management Authority has warned of seawater surges in vulnerable coastal areas and urged fishermen and residents of low-lying areas to remain alert. Meanwhile, more than 53 trains have been cancelled on today and tomorrow as a precautionary measure.
