VISAKHAPATNAM: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the Central government to take steps to extend the rule of reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to private sector through an appropriate legislation. CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat said a resolution has been adopted to this effect at the ongoing 21st CPI (M) Congress in Visakhapatnam.

She said employment of dalits and adivasis in the public sector was affected by multiple factors including ban on recruitment imposed by the Centre, abolition of posts and privatisation of a host of services and sectors besides increase in public-private partnership projects.

She said the CPI (M) wanted allocations for the Scheduled Caste special component plan and tribal sub-plan to be made mandatory and the government should evolve a legal mechanism to address the shortfall in allocations made to these sections as successive Central governments are adopting to exclusionary and discriminatory policies towards SCs and STs.

The 21st CPI (M) Congress in Visakhapatnam which began on Tuesday 14th April will conclude on 19th April. A new road map is expected to be laid at the 21st Communist Party of India (Marxist) party Congress.

The draft political resolution to be adopted at the Visakhapatnam meet says, while the main direction of the struggle is against the BJP, the party will continue to oppose the Congress. The party would not have any truck with the Congress in future.
