The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Tuesday demanded the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing them of presiding over a grave assault on India’s electoral democracy and alleging that the electoral process has been systematically compromised.
The main Opposition party also said the INDIA bloc is meeting in Delhi on Wednesday and Opposition leaders will decide on launching a nationwide movement against alleged electoral malpractices.
The CWC resolution said recent reports about the Election Commission vindicate warnings by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, about the “systematic subversion of India’s electoral process through Vote Chori”.
The resolution said recent developments vindicated Rahul Gandhi’s repeated warnings about what he calls “Vote Chori”, citing concerns over electoral-roll manipulation, selective enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, EVM integrity and changes in the process for appointing the CEC.
The CWC, which met to deliberate on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleged that the poll panel had been reduced to a “one-man show” under the present CEC. Congress said nothing short of the Prime Minister’s resignation would ensure the safety of the Constitution and India’s democracy.
Congress also questioned reports of differences within the Election Commission, alleging that two Election Commissioners had raised objections over changes to Form 6 during the SIR exercise.
The CWC claimed that 13.30 crore names had been removed from electoral rolls, calling the scale of deletions a grave threat to universal adult suffrage. It demanded the immediate suspension of the SIR and restoration of all deleted names.
The party also sought the CEC’s resignation, alleging that the BJP and its “handpicked officials” had undermined the people’s franchise.
Congress vowed to continue its campaign in Parliament, courts and on the streets until electoral transparency and accountability were restored.

The immediate resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, who has forfeited all moral and institutional authority.
The immediate suspension of the SIR in view of serious concerns regarding the integrity and transparency of the electoral rolls being prepared through the SIR, as well as the constitutional validity of the SIR process itself.
The immediate restoration of the 13 crore 30 lakh names removed from the electoral rolls.
