Cine star Aamir Khan’s remarks on the growing intolerance in the country have once again created a political row between BJP and other parties. While BJP has criticised the actor’s comments, Congress has extended its support.

Reacting to this, BJP today said that some isolated extreme incidents should not be allowed to define India. He said that Aamir Khan’s last movie PK was a resounding box office success despite protests by some right wing outfits, stressing that it was a example of how tolerant Indian society is.  Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju said that the debate on intolerance is misplaced.

Aamir Khan too shivers with fear of intolerance

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, however, said in a tweet that the government should reach out to people instead of branding all those who question the government and the Prime Minister as unpatriotic, anti national or motivated.

At an award function in Delhi last evening, the actor joined the number of artists and writers protesting against rising intolerance in the country, saying that there is a sense of insecurity in the country..
‘’I am feeling insecure for the past 6-8 months, due to growing intolerance. For the first time my wife asked if they should leave India’’, says actor Aamir Khan.

He also virtually supported those returning their awards, saying one of the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return their awards.

Aamir Khan’s comments  have also provoked sharp reactions on Twitter with his industry colleagues Anupam Kher and Ram Gopal Varma, berating him, asking “When did ‘Incredible India’ become ‘Intolerant India’ for you”.

Anupam Kher, a staunch believer of the fact that the country is a tolerant has questioned Aamir on his stand on intolerance.
In series of tweets, Kher reminded Aamir that how the country has made him the star and how as an ambassador of ‘Incredible India’ campaign, Khan has in the past promoted the country.

Kher retorted on Twitter by tweeting, “Dear @aamir_khan. Did you ask Kiran which country would she like to move out to? Did you tell her that this country has made you AAMIR KHAN.(sic)” Kher further addded, “Dear @aamir_khan. Did you tell Kiran that you have lived through more worse times in this country & but you never thought of moving out.(sic)”
