A delegation of Bangladeshi clerics led by Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis chief Maulana Mamunul Haque is in Kabul at the Taliban government’s invitation, where they met Afghanistan’s labour and social welfare minister Mullah Abdul Manan Omari, brother of late Taliban founder Mullah Omar.
In a Facebook Live, Mamunul described Omari as “very modest, humble and a wise scholar”. He said talks focused on religious ties, Muslim unity and cooperation in labour, healthcare and trade.
“Afghanistan can be a very promising labour market for Bangladesh,” he said, noting Afghan demand for skilled manpower in engineering, medicine and technology. “Through proper diplomatic ties, we can send our medical professionals. This would not only bring foreign currency to Bangladesh, but also serve millions of deprived Afghans.” He added that bilateral trade stood at only $50 million last year.
Mamunul also hailed the recent Saudi-Pakistan defence pact as an “inspiration for Muslim unity”, stressing the need to support Palestinians “facing brutal oppression backed by Western powers”.
The seven-member team, which flew in via Dubai after Umrah in Saudi Arabia, includes Hefazat-e-Islam’s Abdul Hamid (Pir of Madhupur), Abdul Awal, Abdul Haque, Habibullah Mahmud Qasemi, Monir Hossain Qasemi and Mahbubur Rahman.
The delegation, staying at Kabul Star Hotel, will meet Afghan ministers, the chief justice and scholars, visit quake-hit areas and tour the Mullah Omar Jame Mosque. The visit, organised by UK-based Prosper Afghanistan with Afghan interior ministry support, also ties into preparations for Bangladesh’s Khatme Nabuwat Conference on November 15.
