Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Tuesday as a fresh rise in crude oil prices and renewed uncertainty over the US-Iran negotiations weighed on investor sentiment. The escalation in oil prices, with Brent crude moving close to the $90-a-barrel mark, raised concerns over India’s import bill, inflationary pressures and the profitability of oil-sensitive companies.
The weakness in global markets also contributed to the cautious mood on Dalal Street. The benchmark Nifty 50 fell below the psychologically important 24,500 level, while the Sensex declined nearly 400 points. Selling pressure was particularly visible in FMCG and metal stocks, while pharmaceutical and healthcare counters attracted selective buying.
The S&P BSE Sensex declined 388.19 points, or 0.49 per cent, to close at 78,154.25. The Nifty 50 lost 112.10 points, or 0.46 per cent, to settle at 24,471.70.
The decline came against the backdrop of a renewed rise in international crude prices. Brent crude for October 2026 delivery increased by $2.14, or 2.44 per cent, to $89.86 a barrel. The jump in oil prices came as hopes of a breakthrough in negotiations between the United States and Iran weakened, while uncertainty over the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz remained a major concern for global energy markets.
For India, which depends substantially on imported crude oil, a sustained rise in international oil prices can have implications for the trade deficit, inflation, the rupee and corporate earnings. Higher fuel and transportation costs can also affect consumption and operating margins across several sectors.
Banking, Auto and Telecom Stocks Weigh on Nifty
Selling was broad-based among several heavyweight stocks. Mahindra & Mahindra declined 1.62 per cent, Bharti Airtel fell 1.43 per cent and Axis Bank slipped 1.40 per cent, making them among the major drags on the Nifty.
The weakness in Mahindra & Mahindra reflected pressure on the automobile segment, while declines in Bharti Airtel and Axis Bank added to the broader index drag. FMCG and metal shares were also under pressure during the session.
However, the broader market showed some resilience compared with the headline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index ended flat, while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index gained 0.24 per cent.
Market breadth nevertheless remained negative. On the BSE, 2,033 shares advanced against 2,279 declines, while 209 shares remained unchanged. The breadth indicated that selling was spread across a sizeable portion of the market, even though small-cap stocks managed to finish marginally higher.
Interestingly, the volatility gauge moved lower despite the decline in benchmark indices. The India VIX slipped 3.73 per cent to 11.79, suggesting that near-term volatility expectations remained relatively contained.
Crude Oil Becomes Key Market Risk
Crude oil emerged as one of the most important factors influencing investor sentiment. Brent futures rose towards $90 a barrel after gaining sharply in the previous session.
The rise followed a deterioration in expectations surrounding US-Iran negotiations and uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments.
The latest developments have renewed concerns that elevated crude prices could remain a source of pressure for economies that rely heavily on imported energy. For Indian markets, the implications are particularly important because a prolonged increase in crude prices can put pressure on inflation, the current account and the rupee.
US crude futures also advanced, touching $82.42 a barrel. Both Brent and US crude reportedly reached their highest levels since July 31 after rallying around 5 per cent on Monday.
The market is now also closely watching the US consumer price report. A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could alter expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path and influence global capital flows.
Rupee Weakens; Bond Yields Rise
The domestic currency also remained under pressure. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 95.4450 against the US dollar, compared with its previous close of 95.3050.
A weaker rupee can add to India’s imported inflationary pressures, particularly when crude oil prices are simultaneously rising. Higher dollar-denominated import costs can increase pressure on companies with substantial exposure to imported raw materials.
The Indian government’s 10-year benchmark bond yield also moved higher. The yield rose 0.43 per cent to 6.795 per cent, compared with the previous session’s close of 6.766 per cent.
In the commodities market, MCX Gold futures for October 5, 2026 settlement gained 0.50 per cent to Rs 153,869.
The US Dollar Index was marginally higher at 99.85, while the US 10-year Treasury yield increased 0.79 per cent to 4.735 per cent.
Global Markets Remain Cautious
Global market sentiment was also mixed. Most European equities traded lower amid renewed concerns surrounding US-Iran tensions and weaker UK retail-sales data.
UK retail sales growth slowed considerably in July. Total retail sales increased 1.3 per cent year-on-year, compared with 2.5 per cent growth a year earlier and 1.9 per cent in June 2026. Food sales rose 3.8 per cent, while non-food sales declined 0.7 per cent.
Most Asian markets, however, ended higher, although concerns over the global inflation outlook remained.
On Wall Street, the previous session ended lower. The S&P 500 declined 0.06 per cent to 7,753.12, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.32 per cent to 26,605.36. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.11 per cent to 53,976.04.
Chipmakers, including Intel, were among the stocks weighing on US equities, while investors reassessed the prospects of a deal that could facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Market Outlook
The near-term direction of Indian equities is likely to remain sensitive to movements in crude oil, developments in the US-Iran situation, currency trends and global inflation data.
The rise in crude towards $90 a barrel is particularly important for India because higher energy costs can affect inflation and corporate profitability while simultaneously putting pressure on the rupee and the country’s external balances.
At the same time, strong quarterly performances from selected companies and continued activity in the IPO market indicate that domestic investors remain willing to deploy capital selectively.
Tuesday’s session therefore reflected a market caught between two competing forces: macroeconomic uncertainty and stock-specific earnings optimism. While benchmark indices faced selling pressure, particularly in large-cap names, several companies with strong quarterly numbers attracted significant buying.
For investors, the immediate focus is likely to remain on crude oil prices, global interest-rate expectations, the rupee-dollar movement and further corporate earnings announcements. Any improvement in geopolitical tensions could ease pressure on oil prices and provide relief to equity markets. Conversely, a sustained rise in crude could keep investors cautious and limit the upside in the near term.
