Two personnel of the 40 Assam Rifles were killed after suspected militants ambushed their convoy at around 1:50 pm on Monday at Nungshang Kong along NH-202 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

The deceased have been identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh, who reportedly died on the spot after sustaining bullet injuries. Their bodies were later taken to the Assam Rifles camp at Shangshak.

Residents of nearby villages reported hearing heavy gunfire for several hours after the initial attack, indicating a prolonged exchange of fire between the security forces and the suspected militants.

There was no official confirmation on the duration of the gunbattle or whether any militants were killed or injured during the operation. Condemning the attack, Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said he was deeply saddened by the ambush on the Assam Rifles convoy.

“The two deceased include a warrant officer and a driver. They died on the spot. The incident occurred in Nungshang Khong area, located some 17 km from the district headquarters, under the Ukhrul Police Station limits, when the convoy was returning to the 40th Assam Rifles battalion headquarters at Sangshak,” an officer quoted by a agency.
