The political activities in Nepal are heating up after submission of impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki by ruling Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) Maoist Centre.

After Nepali Congress leader Bimlendra Nidhi’s resignation from the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister now another Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa’s Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has decided to quit the government.

The decision was taken at a Working Executive Committee meeting held at Kathmandu today. Party has also decided to oppose impeachment motion in the parliament. However, it will continue to support local elections and constitution amendment.

The leader of main opposition Communist Party of Nepal-UML KP Sharma Oli has demanded withdrawal of the impeachment motion. Unveiling the party manifesto in the Capital today he said that impeachment motion would not be passed at any cost.

The CPN (Maoist Centre) has concluded that the impeachment motion against Chief Justice had to be brought as the judiciary was found interfering with the executive’s jurisdiction.

In a meeting held at Kathmandu today party stated that the impeachment motion was moved to boost the image of judiciary. Nepali Congress has also said that impeachment motion against Chief Justice was necessary to maintain the prestige of an independent and impartial judiciary.

Earlier in the day Prime Minister Dahal called on President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Both the leaders discussed latest political developments, forthcoming local elections and the impeachment against the Chief Justice.

Meanwhile, students, representatives from various sections of society and some political parties protested on the streets of Kathmandu today against the impeachment of Chief Justice.

On Sunday 249 lawmakers from Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center) had registered a impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki accusing her interfering in the jurisdiction of executive and failing to issue verdicts without being prejudiced.
