Voting is underway in a historic referendum on whether the Britain should remain a member of the European Union or leave.

According to the Electoral Commission, over 46 million people are entitled to take part in the referendum.

Polling will close at 22:00 BST. It is only the third nationwide referendum in UK history and comes after a four-month battle for votes between the Leave and Remain campaigns.

After the referendum polls close, sealed ballot boxes will be collected and transported to the counting venue for each of the 382 local counting areas.

These represent all 380 local government areas in England, Scotland and Wales, plus one each for Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.

The Electoral Commission estimates a final result “around breakfast time” on Friday.

Meanwhile, European Commission Chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned there would be no further renegotiation whatever the result, after EU leaders reached a deal on a new settlement for Britain.

Before the voting on referendum, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das today said that Government is closely tracking developments in the United Kingdom. In a tweet, Mr Das said, India is well prepared.

Meanwhile, London’s former mayor, Boris Johnson, again told voters to elect to leave the bloc and make June 23rd “our Independence Day.” This catchphrase also adorned the front page of Thursday’s top-selling tabloid “The Sun.”

The recent tip in the polls towards the remain camp seemed to have calmed investors, at least, with the British pound hitting a six-month high against the US dollar during Thursday’s trade. The pound’s strength had dipped notably in recent months amid uncertainty leading up to the vote.
