Guru Nanak Jayanti, the birthday of Guru Nanak Devji, is being celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety across the country and various places abroad. Gurudwaras are decorated and devotees are listening ‘Keertan’ and taking holy dips in the Sarovars. Thousands of `langars` or community kitchens and long queues of devotees were seen across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born on April 15, 1469 in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Shekhupura district of Pakistan, now Nankana Sahib. His birthday is celebrated on Kartik Poornima, the full moon day in the month of Kartik.
In Punjab a large number of devotees are visiting Sri Harimandir Sahib ( Golden Temple) at Amritsar. The holy place is decorated and Deepmala will be done in the evening. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi have greeted the nation on the occasion. Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has also wished the nation.
