The Supreme Court today suspended for two months, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court order banning the sale of beef in the state.

The court also directed the Chief Justice of the High Court to constitute a three-judge bench for resolving the issue. The court’s direction to set up a bench came as the High Court’s Srinagar bench passed a conflicting order to the Jammu bench’s earlier one banning the sale of beef under the Ranbir Penal Code.

On the last date of hearing, the apex court had set today as the date to hear the petition in which the ban on beef was challenged. The petitioners said that the conflicting orders only adds to the confusion. It also stated the ban on beef in the state could worsen the law and order situation. The petitioner argued that the Supreme Court must intervene and bring about a clarity to the matter.
