In Punjab, an anti-drug activist, Parvinder Singh Jhota has been shot dead in broad day-light allegedly by a chemist in Mansa, this morning, when he went to the chemist shop and confronted him for allegedly selling drugs. During the argument with the anti-drug activist and his companions, the chemist opened fire on Parvinder who received three-bullet shots. He was taken to the civil hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

Leaders from various political parties, including BJP, SAD and Congress have condemned the incident. They blamed the state government for the deteriorating law and order situation and said that such incidents are raising fingers on – Yudh Nasheyan Virudh – (War against drugs) campaign which the state government had launched more than year back to curtail drug menace.

BJP National President, Nitin Nabin said that the killing of an anti-drug activist is shocking and exposes the alarming state of law and order in Punjab under the AAP government. He said the Aam Aadmi Party came to power promising a drug-free Punjab. Today, those who stand up against drugs are themselves at risk. This is a serious failure of governance. In a social media post, he asked that if those fighting the drug mafia are not safe, who is safe in Punjab? The people of Punjab deserve answers and accountability. BJP Punjab President Kewal Singh Dhillon has written to the Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria for a CBI probe in the case as Mr. Dhillon said that the victim’s father had named local MLA in his statement.

Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) President, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that this incident raises serious concerns about the increasing ill effects of drugs in the society and the safety of those who raise their voice against it.

Meanwhile, Bathinda Range DIG Harjeet Singh told media that one person has been arrested in the murder case.
