In West Bengal, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized around eight kilograms of foreign-origin gold valued at over 11.5 crore rupees in a series of operations conducted on the 8th and 9th of this month. Six persons have been arrested in connection with the seizures.

During the first operation at the Dankuni Toll Plaza, DRI officials intercepted a vehicle and recovered 50 gold bars weighing nearly 6.8 kilograms, valued at approximately ten crore rupees. Some of the gold biscuits bore foreign markings. The DRI said that the occupants failed to produce valid documents for the gold and admitted during interrogation that it was smuggled into India from Bangladesh.

In two separate interdictions, DRI teams intercepted passengers travelling by train at Malda Town and New Jalpaiguri railway stations. Officials seized over one kilogram of foreign-origin gold valued at 1.5 crore rupees from their possession. Both passengers were arrested after failing to provide proof of lawful procurement.

According to the DRI, these successful operations exposed an organised smuggling network using both road and rail routes to transport smuggled gold from the Bangladesh border into the country.
