Indian marathon runner Sawan Barwal created history at the Asian Games 2026 by winning a silver medal in the men’s marathon event, ending India’s 44-year wait for a podium finish in the discipline. Barwal clocked 2:11:37 to register a personal best and set a new national record in the men’s marathon final. He finished behind Japan’s Yamashita, who claimed the gold medal after pulling ahead in the closing stages of the race.
President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Sawan Barwal on winning the silver medal in the men’s marathon at the Asian Games 2026. In a social media post, the President said Barwal’s exceptional performance marked India’s return to the Asian Games marathon podium after four decades. Ms Murmu wished that the achievement would inspire a new generation of distance runners.
