Even as flood-hit people across Odisha are struggling to recover from the extensive damage caused by the recent floods, another spell of heavy rain is threatening to compound their woes.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a Red Warning for the state, forecasting widespread heavy to very heavy rain over the next 24 hours, with heavy rainfall likely to continue for three days.
The Salandi and Jalaka rivers are flowing above danger levels, posing fresh flood threats to Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Keonjhar districts. An upper-air cyclonic circulation over south Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh is likely to trigger the formation of a low-pressure area over the coastal region and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, many flood-affected families are still struggling for essential relief materials and cattle fodder, while extensive crop losses have added to their distress.
