Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh has said that the footwear industry is a backbone of India’s economy, given its large market size of nearly 1.5 to 2 lakh crore rupees and its labour-intensive nature.

Interacting with the stakeholders of the footwear industry in New Delhi today, the Minister highlighted the emergence of new sectors such as technical textiles. Referring to government initiatives, he said that a Production Linked Incentive scheme worth over 10,600 crore rupees has been introduced to promote technical textiles in the country.

During the interaction, Mr Singh acknowledged that the footwear industry continues to face several challenges, including issues related to raw materials and quality. He assured stakeholders that efforts will be made to address them and make the industry more vibrant.
