Orders him to leave country within two weeks

Russia has expelled a British diplomat on allegations of espionage, ordering him to leave the country within two weeks.

According to the Federal Security Service (FSB), the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, counterintelligence officers had discovered that Albertus Gerhardus Janse van Rensburg, a second secretary at the British Embassy, was engaged in spying activities.

Following the incident, Britain’s Chargé d’Affaires in Russia, Danae Dholakia, was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where officials issued a strong protest.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that, due to a violation of national legislation and in line with Article 9 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the diplomat’s accreditation had been revoked.

This marks the second such expulsion this year, after Moscow previously expelled a second secretary from the British Embassy over similar espionage allegations.
