Failure to contain the deteriorating law and order situation ahead of Bangladesh’s February 12 general elections led to the resignation of Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser (CA) of the interim government on Home Affairs, government officials said on Friday.

Chowdhury, a former Inspector General of Police, resigned on Wednesday, days after the killing of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure in the July uprising that ousted the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. “He needed to resign due to his failure to perform at the expected level and shortcomings in crisis management,” a senior government official told journalists. “He was a former IG of Police, and there were expectations that he would play a strong and decisive role,” the official added.

Chowdhury was appointed on November 10, following the July uprising. Officials said unease over his performance intensified after Hadi’s murder.

“Realising this unease, he himself resigned. The government did not ask him to resign,” another official said.

Inqilab Moncho blocks Dhaka’s Shahbag demanding justice for July uprising leader Hadi

Meanwhile  Leaders and activists of the July revolution-inspired ‘Inqilab Moncho’ on Friday blocked the Shahbag intersection in Dhaka, demanding a fair trial over the killing of their spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

The blockade began after Jummah prayers, temporarily halting traffic in the area. From noon, activists gathered in small processions before occupying the intersection. During the protest, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber declared: “From today, we declare this Shahbag as ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Chattar.’ Our movement will not leave the streets until justice is ensured for Hadi’s killing.”

Hadi was critically injured on December 12 after being shot by miscreants on Box Culvert Road in Dhaka’s Paltan area. He was taken to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on December 18. Following the shooting, an attempted murder case was initially filed at Paltan Police Station, which was later converted into a murder case after his death.
