Zakir Hossain from Dhaka:

Security forces in Dhaka used batons, sound grenades and tear gas on Monday to disperse protesters attempting to demolish the remaining structure of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic house at Dhanmondi 32.

Police said at least six sound grenades were exploded on Mirpur Road. “Several sound grenades were used to disperse the protesters,” said Masud Alam, DC, police Ramna division.

Multiple protesters and police personnel were injured in clashes involving baton-charge and brick-hurling. Some demonstrators regrouped near Panthapath, where police fired tear gas. Traffic was suspended and shops shut down in the area.

Witnesses said protesters began gathering from 11:30am, chanting slogans such as “Khuni Hasinar Fashi Chai” and attempting to breach police barricades. Around 2:45pm, law enforcers briefly pulled back under pressure but soon regained control using force.

Protesters brought two excavators to dismantle the house—partially destroyed in a February demonstration that included a “Bulldozer March.”
