The European Union plans to deploy a large election observer mission— the first since 2008— for Bangladesh’s upcoming national polls in February, EU Ambassador Michael Miller said after meeting interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday.
The mission, still awaiting final approval, may comprise 150–200 members, with some arriving six weeks before polling day. “This would be the first time since 2008 that the EU is sending such a full-fledged team,” Miller said, adding that local observers would also be supported.
The meeting covered governance and constitutional reforms, election preparations, judicial and labour reforms, and trade relations. Miller praised the July National Charter as a “very important document for democratic transition,” and lauded recent labour and judicial reforms as “notable successes.”
The Chief Adviser said Bangladesh plans to sign an $800 million deal with AP Moller–Maersk to develop the Laldia Terminal at Chattogram Port. Both sides also discussed human rights, trafficking, and investment ties.
