The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday criticised the joint street programmes announced by several Islamist parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, to press for proportional representation in elections, calling them “unnecessary” and “not good for democracy.”
Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after returning from Singapore, Fakhrul said, “Talks with the Consensus Commission have not ended yet. At a time when discussions are underway, calling such programmes only means creating unnecessary pressure.” He added: “My counter question is – will coming to the streets actually resolve anything?”
The BNP leader reiterated that his party opposes a proportional representation system, saying reforms must come through Parliament with people’s mandate. He also said BNP is not in favour of banning any political party.
On speculation about his presence at the upcoming UN General Assembly alongside Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul said he was unaware of his role but stressed the focus should be on democracy and development. He also confirmed that acting chairman Tarique Rahman would return to Bangladesh “very soon.”
