Detectives have arrested 7 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League (AL) and its affiliated bodies, including four who joined a flash procession in Banglamotor, Dhaka.

According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media wing, the arrests were made on Friday and confirmed on Saturday.

Those detained include Roman Ahmed (32), member of the AL Central Sub-Committee on Agriculture and Cooperatives; Sanjib Islam Afendi (35), former Science and Technology Secretary of the party’s Information and Research Sub-Committee and ex-central executive member of Bangladesh Chhatra League; Bajitpur Chhatra League activist Nabad Ahmed Nob (25); Itna Thana Chhatra League leader Md Mizanur Rahman (40); AL Central Sub-Committee Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Zakir Hossain (55); Tejgaon Jubo League Ward-26 Health Secretary Md Jasim Uddin (40); and Bangshal Thana Ward-33 Organizing Secretary Md Sanakat (38).

DB sources said Roman Ahmed, Afendi, Nob, and Rahman were picked up around 11:15 pm during raids by the Tejgaon division. Zakir Hossain was arrested earlier at 6 pm in Hazaribagh, Jasim Uddin at 10:45 pm in Bashirpool under Demra thana, and Sanakat around 2 am in Bangshal. Police said the seven face specific cases in different stations and were involved in attempts to “destabilise the country and spread panic” through flash processions. Legal action is underway.
