The 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards have been conferred to six journalists from Northeastern States here today at a colourful function.

“Late Kalyan Barooah represented the voice of Assam and the Northeast on the national stage with integrity, dedication and unwavering commitment. My best wishes to all the recipients of the award across different categories,” said Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita in the award ceremony.As many as six journalists have been felicitated during the 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards. Mubina Akhtar (Freelance journalist) received the award in the print media category, whereas Mridusmanta Boruah (Pratidin Times) received the award in the electronic media category. Dr Kshetrimayum Chitrabhanu Devi (Imphal Review of Arts & Politics) received the award in the digital media category.

Veteran journalist Kishore Seram has won the Lifetime Achievement Awards.Farhana Ahmed from The Assam Tribune got special mention in the print media category for her stories on human trafficking and forced migration whereas Aparamita Das got special mention for her photo essay under the still photography category.

Recognition like the Kalyan Barooah Awards would definitely encourage the budding journalists to work with dedication and contribute for the development of Northeast, said former national secretary of BJP and founder of ‘My Home India’ Sunil Deodhar. The award ceremony was coorganised by North East Media Forum (NEMF) and My Home India. “Kalyan Barooah was a true journalist who always thought about the northeast and worked to highlight the region through his writings,” said Deodhar.The Kalyan Barooah Awards is given to the journalists and media persons based in Northeast and any other parts of India for their efforts in promoting the northeastern region through reporting and story-telling. The awards ceremony commemorates the birth anniversary of late Kalyan Barooh, who was associated with The Assam Tribune for more than 27 years. Barooah and his wife Nilakshi Bhattacharya passed away in 2021 due to Covid19 disease.The announcement of instituting the Kalyan Barooah Awards was made in 2022. The 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards have received several nominations from across the country following which the Jury for the Awards decided to make three different categories including print, electronic and digital media. The five-Jury members comprising senior journalists and eminent personalities after a thorough review of the nominations have selected the following names as the winners for the 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards-2024. The Jury also announced the name of the winner for Lifetime Achievement Award. The Jury members including Utpal Borpujari, Moushumi Chakraborty, Sandeep Phukan, Prof Sashwati Goswami, and Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty adopted marking system to select the winners.
