The Boudha stupa is the largest in the world and is said to entomb the remains of Kassapa Buddha. Second to Bouddha is the Swayambhunath stupa located atop a hill in Kathmandu, an ancient sacred complex of stupas and temples built in the Lichchavi period. Namo Buddha is the third popular Buddhist site in Kathmandu Valley, about 40km away from the heart of the city.
It is said that Gautam Buddha took a thousand births before attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. In one of his past lives, at the holy place of Namo Buddhaye, he as a prince was overcome with compassion when he saw a tigress with cubs tormented by starvation. He offered his body to feed her without a moment’s hesitation. Here people come to offer prayer and be inspired by the compassion of Gautam Buddha.
