that food prices, which rose by 10 per cent on an average in many regional economies in Asia this year, could push an additional 64 million people into extreme poverty.
The report also highlighted that the poor families in developing Asia were already spending more than 60 per cent of their income on food. Higher food prices further reduce their ability to pay for medical care and their children’s education.
The report has appreciated the 10-member ASEAN group of countries for establishing an emergency regional rice reserve system under the ASEAN Integrated Food Security Framework.
