United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged for swift, unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged Gaza Strip. In a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo on Thursday, Mr Guterres called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

He said, food, water, medicine and fuel is needed now at scale and has to be sustained. He said, it is not one small operation that is required, as calls mounted for aid to reach the territory’s 2.4 million people.

Meanwhile, Egyptian state-linked media on Thursday said the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, the only route in or out not controlled by Israel will open today after US President Joe Biden struck a deal with Egypt and Israel to allow aid in. Biden had said, up to 20 of the hundreds of trucks waiting on the Egyptian side of the border will be let in as a start.
