MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Wednesday welcomed the Defence ministry’s decision for CBI probe into Adarsh housing society scam. Talking to media persons in Mumbai he said that the land on which the Adarsh housing society is built, belongs to the state government.

In New Delhi the Navy submitted its status report on the Adarsh Housing Society to the Defence Ministry. The Defence Ministry had sought reports on the controversy and its past background from the Army, Navy and the Defence Estates. A controversy has erupted over how the Adarsh Housing Society in upscale Colaba, originally meant to be a six-storey structure for house Kargil war heroes and widows, was converted into a 31-storey building. The high-rise is built on 6,450 sq metres within the Colaba naval area and was cleared on the condition of housing war veterans. But now, it has 103 members, including former service chiefs, senior serving Army officials, a former Environment Minister, legislators and state bureaucrats.  However, the three former service chiefs who were allotted flats in this society have surrendered them.

Meanwhile members of the Adarsh society got a major blow when the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation disconnected the Power and water supply of the building as the occupation certificate had been revoked.
