Renowned Urdu poetess Naseem Nikhat passed away following a cardiac arrest on today (Saturday). She was 65.
Nikhat is survived by her husband Munnawar Jafri, two sons Ali and Samir and a daughter Nazia.
Dr. Naseem Nikhat represented women in the world of poetry for almost three decades in India and abroad. In her poetry, there is a sharp criticism on the rituals and customs made for women in the patriarchal society-
Naseem Nikhat was born on June 10, 1959 in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. She was only one and a half years old, her aunt brought her to Lucknow with and then she was brought up and trained there.
Her aunt Shamim Ara was also fond of poetry. She remembered thousands of Poetry lions orally. She used to participate in the antakshari of poetry behind the scenes at home. This skill of Shamim Ara had a great impact on Naseem as well and his trend also started moving towards poetry.
At the age of just fifteen, Naseem got married in a big family of Lucknow. Her father-in-law, Dr. Gauhar Lucknowi, was a well-known poet of his time. she was allowed to do poetry and get training in his in-laws. It was his family members who took him forward in the world of poetry and started sending him to Mushairas.
