At least seven people have been killed when a suicide car bomb exploded near the presidential palace in the capital Mogadishu in Somalia. District police chief Mucawiye Ahmed Mudey told reporters that at least eight others had been injured.

The Islamist militant group Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack targeted a busy checkpoint near the presidential palace. Eyewitnesses told a news channel that seven cars and three auto-rickshaws were destroyed.
