India’s Lovlina Borgohain settled for bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics as she lost her boxing semifinal bout to Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli in the 69 kg welterweight category on Wednesday.

It was a tough fight against the World Champion from Turkey. However, Lovlina has confirmed another bronze medal for India. Last week became the third boxer to clinch an Olympic medal for India after the legendary Mary Kom and Vijender Singh.

Even though she lost her semifinal bout to the reigning world champion, the Assam’s Golaghat born Lovlina became the first ever from Assam to win an Olympic medal. She is also the first female from the state to represent the country in the Olympics.

In QF She beat C Chen of Chinese Taipei in the 69kg weight category by 4-1. In the pre-quarterfinals, Lovlina defeated her German opponent Nadine Apetz by 3-2 in a split decision. Lovlina has already proved her worth at the global arena by winning two back to back world championships in 2018 and 2019. She won bronze on both occasions.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has congratulated boxer Lovlina Borgohain on winning bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. In a tweet, Mr Thakur said, Lovlina, gave her best punch and India is extremely proud of what she has achieved. The Sports Minister said, she has achieved a bronze medal in her first Olympics and the journey has just begun.

Bollywood celebrities on Wednesday took to social media to congratulate Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain on winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in Tokyo. The 23-year-old sportswoman lost her semifinal bout to reigning world champion Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey 5-0 in the women’s 69kg category. The first Olympics medallist from Assam and the only boxing medal winner for India at Tokyo Olympics had the entire nation cheering for her.

Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan shared Lovlina’s photo on her Instagram story, adding a heart and high-five emojis. Deepika Padukone also congratulated the sports champ by sharing a creative with Lovlina featuring as the Queen in a deck of cards. The Family Man actor Samantha Prabhu also shared the news, adding a ‘dancing girl’ GIF to the Insta story.

Abhishek Bachchan, who himself is a sports enthusiast, took to Twitter to congratulate the boxer. The Manmarziyaan actor shared, “Congratulations @LovlinaBorgohai on bringing home bronze 🥉 at your debut Olympics! We’re all so proud of you 🇮🇳#TokyoOlympics. @WeAreTeamIndia.”
