The Special Protection Group, SPG cover of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former President Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Vadra has been withdrawn. Sources said, they will now be protected with Z-plus security. The decision to withdraw the SPG cover given to the family of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was taken after a detailed security assessment.
The Gandhis were included in the VVIP security list following an amendment in September 1991 in the SPG Act, 1988.
The SPG Act, enacted by Parliament in 1988, was initially supposed to provide security to only the Prime Minister and former Prime Ministers of the country.
Meanwhile, Congress alleged the BJP Government of personal vendetta after the SPG cover of Party Chief Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and daughter Priyanka was removed. Congress Spokesman Anand Sharma said the decision to remove the SPG cover is shocking. He said, the State has a duty to protect and the SPG cover was not favourable.
He said, UPA Government never withdrew security cover of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpaye
