The leader of the Islamic State terrorist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is believed dead after being targeted by a US military raid in Syria. Citing sources, several US news outlets reported that the US military has conducted an operation against the fugitive leader of the IS group. However, the claims of a raid against Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi have not been confirmed.

A US official told the Associated Press late Saturday that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was targeted in Syria’s Idlib province. The official said confirmation that the IS chief was killed in an explosion is pending.

The White House said, US President Donald Trump would make a “major statement” today but gave no further details. US President Donald Trump earlier shared a cryptic tweet saying something very big has just happened.

The strike came amid concerns that a recent US pullback from northeastern Syria could cause the IS to regroup after it had lost vast stretches of territory it had once controlled.
