Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and leaders of the INDIA bloc have indicated that their protest campaign against the Election Commission is set to enter a broader national phase following Thursday’s demonstration at Rajghat in the national capital. The protest came a day after opposition MPs were stopped and detained while attempting to march towards Jantar Mantar, further escalating tensions between the opposition and the authorities.

On October 8, senior opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and MPs from several INDIA bloc parties, gathered at Rajghat and accused the Election Commission of failing to address concerns raised over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The leaders said repeated restrictions on their attempts to demonstrate had strengthened their resolve to continue the campaign.

The confrontation between the Opposition’s INDIA Bloc and the Election Commission escalated further this week as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vowed to continue protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The agitation, which began with a march towards the Election Commission headquarters in Delhi, has now evolved into a broader political campaign that Opposition parties say will be carried across the country.

Over the past three days, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior leaders from INDIA Bloc parties staged protests in different parts of the national capital. Demonstrators accused the Election Commission of compromising electoral integrity through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and demanded the restoration of voter names allegedly removed from electoral rolls. Police interventions, detentions of Opposition MPs and restrictions on public demonstrations further intensified the political standoff.

Speaking after his detention during a protest march, Rahul Gandhi asserted that the Opposition would not retreat until its concerns were addressed. He described the movement as a struggle to protect democratic institutions and electoral transparency. INDIA Bloc leaders have alleged that constitutional bodies are under pressure and have called for greater accountability from election authorities.

Looking ahead, Opposition leaders have outlined an expanded action plan. Besides continued demonstrations in Delhi, Congress has asked its state, district and block units to organize coordinated protests. Several INDIA Bloc partners are expected to intensify public outreach campaigns, hold rallies, and mobilize civil society groups and student organizations. The alliance is also considering constitutional and legal avenues, including engagements with the President and continued intervention in judicial proceedings related to electoral issues.

Political observers believe the issue could emerge as a major national campaign in the coming months, with the Opposition seeking to build a common platform around electoral reforms and democratic accountability. While the BJP has dismissed the protests as politically motivated, the INDIA Bloc has indicated that the agitation will continue nationwide, making it one of the most significant Opposition mobilizations in recent years.
