At least 20 persons mostly students killed and many others injured in a major fire breakout at a commercial complex in Sarthana area of Surat.
According to sources, fire broke out on the second floor of Takshshila apartment, where about 50 students attending private tution classes.
About 17 teams of firefighters rushed to the spot to control the fire and rescue works. Injured people mostly students have been admitted to the hospitals.
Meanwhile, State government has ordered the inquiry of the incident. Principal Secretary of Urban Development department Mr. Mukesh Puri has been asked to rush on the spot and submit the report in 3 days. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has also announced Rs. 4 lakh immediate cash assistance to the families of victims.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed extreme anguish at the fire tragedy in Surat. In a tweet, he said his thoughts are with the bereaved families and hoped that the injured recover quickly. Mr Modi said, he has asked the Gujarat government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected.
Health Minister J P Nadda has assured Gujarat government of all possible help in view of fire incident at a coaching centre in Surat.
He has asked the Director AIIMS New Delhi to be ready with all necessary arrangements. A team of burn trauma doctors has been constituted and they have been put on . Mr Nadda spoke to State Chief Minister Vijay Rupani following the incident.
