Good Friday is being observed today by Christians all over the world to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday, that marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Prayers and masses have been organised in the Churches and Chapels. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday and Easter Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today remembered the sacrifices of Jesus Christ. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, Lord Jesus’ life, rich ideals and exemplary courage are a source of strength for many. He said, Jesus Christ’s teachings emphasise a world free from inequality and injustice.

In Goa, special masses and processions take place in all major churches including those at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa; and at the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church and Don Bosco grounds in Panaji.

At the Panaji church square, large crowds in formal clothes participate in the mass and the Way of the Cross. Priests celebrate the mass in Konkani, describing the sufferings of Jesus Christ.

The ceremony of the Way of the Cross takes place as a re-enactment of scenes from the Crucifixion. An image of Jesus carrying the large wooden cross is taken in a procession through streets by clergymen.

Bands playing sombre music accompany the procession to create an atmosphere of mourning. Several Good Friday programmes are organized in South Goa’s Salcete taluka.

The main programme is held on Moti Hill in Margao city at Piedade Saaibin chapel. Processions in Margao lead to the city’s Holy Spirit church. Other events are also organized in Majorda, Nuvem, Velli, Asolna and Cuncolim in South Goa.
