Young Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen and Harsheel Dani entered the fourth round of the men’s singles competition on the second day of the 83rd Yonex Sunrise Senior National Badminton Championship in Guwahati on Wednesday.
Lakshya notched up a 21-14, 21-13 win over Vipul Saini. Harsheel outclassed seventh seed Balraj Kajla 21-14 21-15 in another match.
Former champions Sourabh Varma and Rituparna Das also entered the fourth round after notching up contrasting wins. Sourabh beat K Jagadeesh 18-21, 21-11, 21-15. Rituparna beat Saloni Kumari 21-14, 21-15.
Also making into the 4th round in Men’s singles were 12 other shuttlers, including Arintap Dasgupta and Rahul Yadav.
In women’s singles, as many as 15 shuttlers, including Gayatri Gopichand and Riya Mookerjee progressed to the next round. The first day of the Nationals witnessed as many as 250 matches yesterday.
The preliminaries end today and will decide who all get to meet the top eight singles seeds. The top seeds will begin their challenge directly from the pre-quarters.
Similarly, in doubles, the top four teams have been exempted from playing until the quarters. The seeds will be placed after the Super Draw is conducted tomorrow.
Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu will be the top attractions in women’s singles. Sameer Verma will be the biggest name in men’s singles.
