Japan and South Korea have welcomed plans for a second summit between US President Donald Trump & North Korean leader Kim Jong to be held in February. The South Korean government says the country supports efforts for concrete steps toward complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The South is sending a senior official to attend the same international conference in Sweden… where envoys from the US and the North are expected to meet. Lee Do-hoon is expected to meet with US and North Korean representatives.
Meanwhile, a senior official at Japan’s foreign ministry spoke with the US special representative for the North, Stephen Biegun, by telephone.
Kenji Kanasugi, the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau chief, got a briefing about the US preparations for the summit. The pair agreed to coordinate with each other on the steps involved in the denuclearization process.
