Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has called for a re-look at India’s ancient values, identify the most suited aspects for today and incorporate them in the people’s lives.
Giving away the Mahaveer Awards instituted by the Baghwan Mahaveer Foundation in Chennai this evening, he said, India has been a glorious civilization for long.
He urged the citizens to reclaim the country’s rightful position in the world, as a nucleus of human values and wisdom.
Mr Naidu said, the ideals of Jainism is firmly rooted in the ideals of love, sacrifice, nonviolence and peace. He recalled that Bhagwan Mahaveer taught the way to liberation and bliss by living a life of harmlessness and renunciation.
He said, the life of Mahaveer and the philosophy of Jainism hold many crucial lessons for contemporary world. He said, today the people live in times of great turmoil, as they are fighting violence in several forms, from terrorism to insurgency to civil wars. He also noted that the public are facing the consequences of unchecked exploitation of resources and unbalanced and poorly planned developmental activities.
He said, some of the answers to the pressing questions of our time can be found in the philosophy, principles and teachings of Mahaveer.
