JAPAN RAIN

AMN / TOKYO

The death toll due to floods and landslides caused by record rainfall in the western part of Japan has risen to 130. Authorities say 2 others are without vital signs and 59 are missing.

Hiroshima Prefecture is the hardest-hit area, with 44 people reported dead. Fatalities have also been reported from other prefectures.

Officials said the death toll may rise as the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

People affected by record rainfall in western Japan remain without water and electricity due to damaged lifeline infrastructure.

The health and welfare ministry says 269,000 households remained without water as of 5 AM on Tuesday. At least 2,300 households were without power as of 11 AM.

NHK has learned that more than 8,400 people in 15 prefectures, mainly in hardest-hit Okayama and Hiroshima, were staying at shelters as of Tuesday morning.

The distribution of goods to the affected areas has been disrupted, mainly due to the suspension of freight train operations between the Tokyo Metropolitan area and the western regions.
